WELCOME TO FIFTH GRADE 2022!

I am so excited to have you here! We are going to have a wonderful year together! If you ever have any questions, please feel to reach out to me at k.larrivee@cdsedu.org.
LONG TERM SUB INTRO
Hello!
My name is Austin Mason, and I am currently a student teacher in Mrs. Larrivee’s 5th grade classroom! I attend Husson University and will be graduating officially on May 6th. I have been in Mrs. Larrivee’s classroom since October of 2021, and have been in the classroom “full time,” since January of 2022. I will be the long term substitute for Mrs. Larrivee for the rest of the year, as of April 13th. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you all, and tell you how much fun I have had getting to know your students so far, and how much I look forward to working with them for the rest of the trimester! I want you to know that if you ever have any questions, you can email me at either of the following:
masona@husson.edu
a.mason@cdsedu.org
Again, it has been my pleasure working with your students and I truly look forward to continuing working with them for the rest of the trimester. Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions, concerns, or comments, and I will do my best to respond quickly and accordingly.
Thank you,
Austin Mason

GRADE 5 EXPECTATION REMINDERS
We've been having some issues with a large number of students not following the routines and guidelines of fifth grade. So, we spend some time reviewing the routines that should be followed. Students know that if they are not following these routines, they will get a reminder, and then if it continues, we will be issuing detentions.
UNBIRTHDAY BOOKS!
Back in October, we celebrated our UNBIRTHDAYS (Alice in Wonderland style), and each student received a coupon for a free book from Mr. T and I. We ordered the books and they finally came in! Enjoy our little video, celebrating our unbirthdays and new books.
MARCH!
Can you believe we are already in March?! That means hopefully nicer temperatures and brighter days are ahead of us! Here are a couple things happening in our room recently!
We are completing a March Madness Tournament for books that we have read this year. Every Friday we will do the competition and the books that will win will move on to the next round.
Any guesses on the winner? |
So far, we have learned about the northeast and southeast regions of the U.S. We have learned the capitals, abbreviations, and the culture of each region. We will be focusing these next couple weeks on the midwest region, followed by the southwest and the west. Remind your students to keep practicing their states and capitals because at the end there will be a cumulative assessment on all of the states and their capitals.

For the month of January, we researched and wrote essays about animals of their choosing. In the month of February, we converted our essays into magazines with a younger audience. We focused on the five major nonfiction text structures when writing our magazines. Then, we went to Kindergarten, first, and second grade classrooms and shared our magazines. It was so fun!
Right before break, we finished reading Holes by Louis Sachar. It was a huge hit in our classroom, and we all had fun reading it! To celebrate finishing the book, we watched the movie and Mr. T and I made "Sploosh" for the students (from the book) and gave the students a bag of Funyuns (because of the onions in the book). Some students have asked for a recipe for the "Sploosh." We mixed frozen peaches and white grape/peach juice with ice in a blender. It was delicious!

I hope you are all doing well, and as always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to reach out!

DECEMBER!
Hi All! I hope you are all having a fantastic December. I know things have been crazy with quarantines, students, out, and more. I know everyone is feeling ready for a few days off!
Our last day of school before break is on December 23. It will be a half day. We return January 3rd.
Student Teacher
We have a student teacher beginning in January. He will be with us until at least April!
Social Studies Project
We have been working really hard on a social studies mapping project. Students had to research the physical features of a continent. Then we made the physical features with clay and painted it. It was a very intense project, and I am so excited with the results! You should be so proud of their hard work! (Note: Some students were not here for the photos!)

HEADPHONES, BOOK ORDER, & OTHER THINGS
Headphones
Our new Spanish program is online. This means that all students will need a set of headphones. These will just stay in your child's backpack at all times. If you are unable to get a pair of headphones for your child, please let me know as soon as possible.
Book Order
THANK YOU so much for purchasing so many books from the book order. Because of the amount of books that were purchased, I was able to get a lot of new books for my classroom library. I really appreciate it.

Other Things
- Next Friday, October 29, we will be having an "Un-birthday Party." Students are welcome to wear PJs to school and we will be having a treat that day. :)
- It's almost November, which means that it is getting chillier at snack and recess. Please make sure your child is dressing warmly for these times.
- Picture day is next Tuesday, October 26.
FIELD TRIP!
The fifth grade recently went on a field trip to Crane Brothers Potato Farm to experience potato harvest first hand. We started out in the potato field, where we got to watch windrowers dig potatoes from the ground. Then a harvester came behind and put the potatoes onto huge potato trucks. Our students even got a chance to dig bags of potatoes with their own hands!
After the field, we went to the potato storage shed. We watched a truck unload into a hopper and then conveyor belts brought the potatoes into the building where a huge pile of potatoes were. Crane Brothers distributes to Frito Lay, so all of the potatoes we saw at our field trip will eventually be made into potato chips!
Finally, we stopped at Fielder’s Choice for a picnic lunch and ice cream. The PTG graciously paid for our students’ ice cream. It was a wonderful day!

Hello, everyone! This year, I'm working with an incredible, hardworking group of students who will be navigating an entirely new situation this back-to-school season. Every week my students will be learning part in the classroom and part from home. To give them the best education possible in these circumstances, I need to be prepared with the right instructional resources. Each year to support my students, I purchase additional resources to help them learn at their best. Since learning will take place in such a unique way this year, these resources will be especially important. A contribution from you today will ensure my students begin the year ready to learn and grow in and out of the classroom. 100% of your contribution will go towards purchasing the resources my students need to learn and grow both in the classroom, and at home. How your contribution will support my students Whenever I need additional classroom materials, I turn to TpT. Their site has so many creative and engaging resources! Plus, all the materials are created by other teachers, so I know I can trust that they'll work for my students. Every dollar you contribute to my TpT ClassFund campaign will help me purchase high-quality activities that will inspire my students to learn and ensure they don't fall behind. Your contribution will also help to support other teachers from around the world who have created these amazing resources. Thank you so much to those who have donated so far. If you would like to donate, simply click the image to the right. Again, thank you so much! |
